In the case of a head rest for motor-vehicle seats, the head-cushion carrier of which can be adjusted relative to the support rods, which are spatially fixed in the seat back, there is incorporated in the head-cushion carrier an electric drive motor. The electric drive motor drives two part shafts on which there is in each case seated a drive wheel in the form of a driving pinion or a friction wheel. Each drive wheel and each support rod is allocated a running track - rack or flat track. Each part shaft is rotatably connected to the drive motor via a torque transmission means, such as an overload coupling, which is at least torsionally elastic. Taking into account detrimental external forces acting on the head-cushion carrier, the head rest permits an electromotive horizontal and/or vertical adjustment of the head-cushion carrier.
