PURPOSE:To increase the processing speed of a character positioning system and to produce a histogram at a high speed by executing the processing of one word within a picture memory by a single instruction. CONSTITUTION:The read addresses are produced by a read address generating circuit 4 and read successively so that the picture data is extracted every word for each horizontal scan when a horizontal black bit histogram is produced for the binary coded picture data on a ship, etc. stored in a picture memory 3. The extracted data of one word (8 bits) is used as an address to read out a table 1 and then supplied to an adder 2. Then the total number of black bits of one horizontal scan is obtained by the adder 2 after one horizontal scan data is extracted. Thus one word can be processed by a single instruction and therefore the processing speed is increased with a character positioning system.
