PURPOSE:To adjust automatically the optical position of an optical readout system by moving automatically a solid-state image pickup element and a lens by a moving mechanism to positions where image data is maximum and minimum. CONSTITUTION:The optical readout system 13 consists of a frame 16, a reflecting mirror 14, a lens 5, the solid-state image pickup element 1, and an amplifier substrate and is fitted to an adjusting table 17. A testing original 6 is lighted by a fluorescent lamp 15 through the reflecting mirror 14 and lens 5 from behind to form an image on the photoelectric conversion surface of the solid-state image pickup element 1. The solid-state image pickup element 1 outputs a voltage corresponding to the density of the testing original 6. The output signal of the solid-state image pickup element 1 is digitized by an A/D converter 8 and written in a memory 9 as image data and processed by a microprocessor 10 to calculate the position shift of the solid-state image pickup element; and a correcting signal corresponding to the position is sent out to a driving circuit 11 to drive the stepping motor (not shown in figure) of a driving circuit, thereby moving the moving mechanism 12.
