PURPOSE:To decrease an amount of CO and HC discharged, by a method wherein a correction value, applicable to proportional control, is set to a low value according to a specified condition of an exhaust gas concentration detection value, and is set according to the load condition of an engine. CONSTITUTION:An O2 sensor 15, inserted in an exhaust pipe, detects oxygen concentration in exhaust gas to feed the result to an ECU 5. In the ECU 5, a first correction value, applicable to proportional control, is set to a low value when an exhaust gas concentration detection value is varied from the rich side to the lean side in relation to a reference value, and is set depending upon the load condition of an engine. This enables reduction of an amount of a CO and an HC component discharged.
