PURPOSE:To prevent the breakage of a sensor element body while facilitating the manufacture thereof, by circumferentially wrapping the outer surface of the sensor element body made up of an AgI based solid electrolyte sinter integral with a glass tube wall except for the upper and lower end faces. CONSTITUTION:A glass tube 5 is sealed up with, for example, a mixture of RbI powder and AgI powder as AgI based solid electrolyte material powder under a reduced pressure, heated up to at least a enough value to make the mixture react and sinter into RbAg4I5 and then, allowed to cool. Then, the glass tube 5 sealed up integral with RbAg4I5 is cut up to a specified size to form an AgI based solid electrolyte sensor element body 1 circumferentially wrapped with the glass tube 5. Then, Au electrodes 2 and 2' are provided at both end faces of the sensor element body 1 and connected separately to lead wires 4 and 4' while the electrode 2 is provided with a silver nitrate coated layer 3. This eliminates possible breakage in handling and the need for precision molding thereby simplifying the manufacture. |
