PURPOSE:To regenerate the catalyst effectively and to maintain the service life of the catalyst for a long period by washing the activity-deteriorated catalyst with a specified aromatic series solvent, after that by contacting said catalyst with an inert gas to be dried, then by washing it with water. CONSTITUTION:The activity-deteriorated catalyst which has been used for the hydrogen treatment of coal-tar pitch is washed with an aromatic series solvent whose UOP-K value is <=10.5. Said catalyst is then contacted with an inert gas and dried, thereafter it is contacted with water and washed to regenerate said catalyst. The aromatic series solvent whose UOP-K value is <=10.5 includes middle oil, treated oil, anthracene oil, alpha or beta-methyl naphthalene, etc. the washing of said catalyst by this aromatic series organic solvent is usually carried out while heating by contacting this organic solvent directly with the catalyst layer, the heating temperature is generally 100-450 deg.C.
