PURPOSE:A sulfide composition suitable for producing an arylene sulfide polymer, capable of being dehydrated at relative low temperature in a short time, comprising an alkali metal hydrosulfide and at least one of alkoxy metal salt as a novel alkali metal feeding source. CONSTITUTION:A sulfide composition comprising an alkali metal hydrosulfide (Li, Na, K, Rb, etc. may be cited as alkali metal, preferably Na, and anhydride or hydrate may be used) and at least one alkoxy metal salt (especially preferably sodium methylate, sodium ethylate). Further the sulfide composition is reacted with a polyhaloaromatic compound (especially preferably p- dichlorobenzene) in an organic amide polar solvent (especially preferably N- methyl-2-pyrrolidone) to give an arylene sulfide polymer (e.g., polyphenylene sulfide, etc.). EFFECT:A high-purity polymer is obtained.
