NEW MATERIAL:An optically active compound shown by the formula I (X is COO, or OCO; Y is COO or OCO when X is COO, and Y is OCO when X is OCO; Z* is optically active group; A is alkyl or alkyloxy which is not optically active). EXAMPLE:Optically active p-[p'-(1-methylheptyloxy)benzoyloxy]benzoic acid p-octyloxyphenyl ester. USE:Useful as one component for liquid crystal composition, showing improved performances as a constituent component for SC* liquid crystal composition of switching element of guest host type. Usable as an inhibitor for reverse domain formation. PREPARATION:Various compounds having different Z* in the formula I are obtained by using an optically active alkanol such as inexpensively obtainable S(+)-2-octanol or S(-)-2-methylbutanol.
