PURPOSE:To enable the level of a liquid to be satisfactorily measured without electrically charging the fluid by a simple structure by transmitting a pulse wave through a wire for transmitting an elastic wave that is dipped in the liquid. CONSTITUTION:A level gage comprises wire 1 for transmitting an elastic wave, an excited coil 8, a detecting coil 9 and processing means for calculating a liquid level on the basis of a first time at which a pulse wave that has been propagated in a liquid is detected by the detecting coil 9 and a second time at which the pulse wave that has been transmitted through the wire 1 itself is detected by the coil 9. When an excited pulse is transmitted, a receiving gate and a distance gate are formed by the excited pulse, a counting input is conducted on the basis of the distance gate and the first time for detecting the pulse wave that has been propagated in the liquid is measured. A counter circuit calculates the liquid level and informs of no liquid on the basis of the difference between the first time and the second time inputted from a preset circuit.
