PURPOSE:To produce a poly(2-hydroxy-6-naphthoyl) whisker useful as an isotropic reinforcing material of high elasticity and high strength, by polymerizing and crystallizing a specified compound in a solvent. CONSTITUTION:A compound of formula I (wherein R<1> is H or formula II, R<3> is a 1-4C alkyl or phenyl having 0-3 methyl groups, R<2> is H or a phenyl having 0-3 1-2C alkyl groups, and at least either of R<1> and R<2> is H but they are not H at the same time) is dissolved in a solvent (e.g., paraffin) which has a b.p. >=270 deg.C, is insoluble or difficulty soluble in poly(2-hydroxy-6-naphthoyl) and is inert to said compound so that the concentration of said compound or oligomer to be dissolved in said solvent may be 0.3-4.0wt% in terms of its polymer and polymerized and crystallized at 275-350 deg.C without agitation or with low-speed agitation of 20rpm or below to obtain poly(2-hydroxy-6-naphthoyl) whisker of a length (L) of 6-200mum, a diameter (D) of 0.5-5mum and L/D>=10.
