PURPOSE:To improve roughness of a machined surface in a work, by electrically insulating a machine main unit from the work while providing a means which controls this electric insulation to be released and reset. CONSTITUTION:If a magnetic conductor 17 is turned on by a control device, a machine, placing a part between a surface plate 4 and a work 13 in a conductive condition through short-circuiting wires 19a, 19b, performs machining equal to the conventional machining by releasing insulation. If the magnetic conductor 17 is turned off, the machine, eliminating a stray capacity of the machine main unit itself and a stray capacity between a wire electrode and the machine main unit because the work 13 is electrically insulated from the machine main unit by an insulating jig 21 mounted to the surface plate 4, enables energy by a capacitor discharge, generated when electric discharge machining is performed, to be suppressed, and the machine, decreasing single shot discharge energy, obtains fine roughness of a machined surface in the work. The machine can automatically perform general machining and finishing by switching the insulation through the magnetic conductor.
