PURPOSE:To eliminate an external power, by a method wherein a control valve, opening and closing a scavenging hole, is placed in the scavenging hole part of the cylinder liner of an internal combustion engine, the valve is coupled to a pneumatic driving device, and a power source, by means of which the device is driven, is automatically provided through the working of the engine. CONSTITUTION:During operation of an internal combustion engine, in the down stroke of a piston 33, the outer peripheral part of a valve liner 40 blocks an air passage hole 42 of a lower piston cover 41, and when a lower piston ring 45 is started to close a scavenging hole 32, air in air piston chamber 46 is compressed. When the piston 33 is lowered about to a bottom dead point, an air passage groove 43 is communicated with the air passage hole 42, and compressed air in the chamber 46 flows in a pneumatic cylinder 35. This causes depressing of the pneumatic piston 36 against a spring 37 to release the scavenging hole 32 by means of a scavenging control valve 4. Opening of the control valve 4 causes shifting of the piston 33 into a raising stroke, which is continued until the lower end of the valve liner 40 releases the air passage hole 42.
