PURPOSE:To widen the range of variable power of a picture reading device by providing a storing device that stores data binary coded by a binary coding device and changing magnification of reading an original by enlarging or reducing the data electrically and thereby making lowering of picture quality of output signals relatively small. CONSTITUTION:Various input/output signals are connected to a CPU 30 that controls detection of density of an original. Signals of an image pickup element 20 are converted by a binary coding circuit 38 from analog signals to digital 1 bit signal and outputted to outside through an output circuit 40. The output circuit 40 outputs binary coded signals to outside or intercepts according to an output control signal outputted by the CPU 30. In case of electrical variable power (1/2 of specified magnification), a 1/2 signal is outputted, and binary coded signals are thinned out by the output control signal. That is, even number lines of binary coded signals are outputted to a printer through the output circuit 40 by the control signal at the time of even number of main scanning (lateral direction).
