PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a strong electron-accepting compound for electrolytic capacitor, electronic material, etc., easily, in high yield and purity, by recrystallizing tetracyanoquinodimethane from an organic solvent in the presence of a halogen. CONSTITUTION:Tetracyanoquinodimethane (abbreviated as TCNQ) contaminated with a complex, etc., is dissolved in an organic solvent such as acetonitrile, ethyl acetate, etc., under heating in the presence of a halogen or a halogen compound, and the solution is cooled or the solvent is distilled off from the solution to obtain the objective compound. The amount of halogen, etc., is 1-60pts.(wt.), preferably 5-30pts. per 100pts. of TCNQ. N-bromosuccinimide, phosphorus pentachloride, etc., can be used as the halogen or halogen compound.
