PURPOSE:To obtain a fluorescent substance, having high exposure sensitivity of a fluorescent slurry and capable of giving a fluorescent membrane with slight color mixture, by keeping a fluorescent substance suspension containing a fluorescent substance and zinc ions under alkaline conditions, and adsorbing the deposited Zn(OH)2 on the surface of the fluorescent substance. CONSTITUTION:For example, a fluorescent substance is put in pure water, and fully suspended therein. An adequate amount of an aqueous solution containing at least one water-soluble zinc compound selected from zinc sulfate, zinc acetate, zinc nitrate and zinc halide is added to the above-mentioned suspension, and at least one alkali selected from NaOH, KOH and NH4OH is added thereto to adjust the pH to 7.5-11 and deposit a substance for treating the surface represented by Zn(OH)2 for adsorption on the surface of the fluorescent substance. The resultant suspension is allowed to stand to settle the fluorescent substance having fine particles of the Zn(OH)2 sticking thereto. The supernatant liquid is then removed, and the settled fluorescent substance is dehydrated, washed with water and dried to afford the aimed fluorescent substance.
