A redundant proximity switch exhibits two diversitary sensor channels: a photosensor (1) detecting light/dark changes, and a capacitive measuring sensor (2). An evaluating circuit allocated to the sensors (1, 2) and consisting of an amplifier (3), a differentiating section (4) and a pulse shaper (5) responds to, in particular, signal changes. The functional reliability of the proximity switch is increased by the fact that the redundant sensor channels (1, 2) function in accordance with different diversitary physical principles and the information items obtained from them can be combined in a data register (6) and logically operated on in a further control unit (9). <IMAGE>
