PURPOSE:To obtain the titled substance useful as a synthetic intermediate for a 3-vinyl-3-cephem compound having strong antibacterial activity, in high yield, by reacting a 3-hydroxymethyl-3-cephem compound with a triarylphosphine and iodine. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound of formula II (R<3> is aryl) [e.g. (6R,7R)-2- benzhydryloxycarbonyl-8-oxo-7-salicylideneamino-- 5-thia-1-azabicyclo[4,2.0]oct-2- en-3-ylmethyl-triphenyl-phos-p-honium iodide] can be produced by reacting the compound of formula I [R<1> is (protected) amino; R<2> is (protected) carboxyl] [e.g. (6R,7R)-3-hydroxymethyl-8-oxo-7-salicylideneamino-5-thia- 1-azabicyclo-[4,2,0] oct-2-en-2-carboxylic acid benzhydryl] or its salt with a triarylphosphine (e.g. triphenylphosphine) and iodine.
