PURPOSE:To print a color mixture character while preventing the positional shift of a color, by a method wherein color information is read prior to printing operation and, when a character printed by overlapping a plurality of different color inks is present in printed characters, the carriage operation start point at the time of printing by each color is set to the same position. CONSTITUTION:When the editing of the printing data of one line was finished, color information is read from a memory to judge whether a color mixture character is present in the line. When there is no color mixture character, shortest distance printing is performed by each color ink. When there is the color mixture character, if a printing direction is right, the carriage operation start point at the left end of a printing range is stored and, if the printing direction is left, the carriage operation start point B at the right end of the printing range is stored. Next, the colors of inks contained in the line are investigated in the order of yellow, red and blue on the basis of color information and a carriage is moved to a printing start point with respect to the color inks contained in the line to perform the change to color ink to be printed before the printing of the character containing the color of said color ink is performed.
