An iron-based alloy having high abrasion resistance at temperatures in the region from ambient to 650 DEG C and suitable for use as a hard-facing composition is deposited on a workpiece by the mass-welding method, using an iron or steel wire consumption electrode and a granular metal filler. Selection of the composition of the filler powder, typically from 46 to 50% of Cr, from 8 to 8.5% of bound C, from 5 to 5.5% of Mn, less than 1% of Si, from 0.5 to 1% of Mo, the remainder mainly iron optionally with small amounts of Nb, Ti, W, V and B, and maintenance of the welding ratio at not more than 1.6 : 1 enables a hard-phasing alloy composition comprising from 12 to 25% by weight of Cr, from 4 to 4.9% by weight of C and from 38 to 45% by volume of abrasion-resistant primary carbides of the (Cr/Fe)7C3 type to be applied to the workpiece.
