PLASTIC OPTICAL FIBER AND ITS PRODUCTION

PURPOSE:To form various refractive index distributions to a core part and to increase the quantity of optical transmission by spinning a thermosetting resin and using the spun thermosetting resin as the core part. CONSTITUTION:A thermosetting resin monomer 16 and a polymn. initiator are mixed and the mixture is filled into a tank 1, from which the resin monomer 16 is pumped 3 to a capillary 14 disposed in a warm water tank 5. The capillary 14 receives the heat from a heat medium (warm water) 18 in the tank 5 to cure the resin therein in the state of high viscosity. The cured thermosetting resin is discharged from a nozzle 6 when the viscosity of the resin increases to about 1X10<4> poise. The thermosetting resin emerges in the form of yarn from the nozzle 6 to form a fiber 17. The fiber is thereafter heated by a curing part (curing tank) 7 consisting of a heater, etc. and is further cured to form the fiber. The optical fiber is formed if a clad part is provided to such fiber.
