Mixed oxide catalyst mfr. e.g. for methanol synthesis

Prodn. of a catalyst based on Cu, Zn and Al oxides and opt. B oxide involves (a) pptn. of an aq. soln. of a Cu salt and opt. a B cpd. with ammonium (bi)carbonate; (b) pptn. of an aq. soln. of a Zn salt and opt. a B. cpd. with alkali hydroxide; and (c) calcination of a mixt. of these 2 pptes. with an Al2O3 precursor. The catalyst is specified for use in the synthesis of MeOH from a gas mixt. of CO and/or CO2 and H2; in a CO conversion reaction; in hydrogenation; or in a MeOH decompsn. reaction. The catalyst can be made with good reproducibility. It has superior activity at relatively low temps. and pressures and high mechanical strength, e.g. attrition resistance and compression strength.
