PURPOSE:To obtain an artificial liver-like tissue secreting collagen, lypocyte and bile-relating substance, by culturing a parenchymatous cell of liver in a medium containing a specific factor and insulin. CONSTITUTION:A parenchymatous cell separated from a warm-blooded animal is cultured in a medium containing insulin and a cell-proliferation factor produced from the serum obtained from the homogenate of the intestinal mucosa of a warm-blooded animal (e.g. rat, mouse, etc.) or from the serum obtained from the blood of a warm-blooded animal having damaged liver, to obtain the objective artificial liver-like tissue. The tissue contains arranged liver cells contacting closely with each other, has gaps corresponding to the capillary bile ducts and secrets collagen, lipocyte and bile-relating substance. The liver- like tissue is useful for the in vitro test of liver function and pharmacological test. It is applicable also as a substitute for artificial liver in clinical therapy.
