PURPOSE:To decrease compensation errors by selecting a signal of a picture element in a direction with less change in picture at left/right, or oblique upper/ lower position to a defective picture element in picture elements arranged in oblique lattice form to replaced it with a signal of a defective picture element. CONSTITUTION:A delay circuit 9 outputs a signal S6 to a terminal 9a, a signal S5 to an output terminal 9b, ... when a signal S0 is outputted to an output terminal 9d. A signal outputted from terminals 9a-9c, 9e-9g is compared as the relation of quantity of a signal difference between two picture elements by a comparator circuit 12 via subtraction circuits 10a-10c, absolute circuits 11a-11c, and mean value circuits 13a-13c, a selection circuit 14 and a replace ment circuit 16 replace a signal (S1+S6)/2 with the signal S0 when [S1-S6] is a minimum value, replace (S2+S6)/2 with the signal S0 when [S1-S6] is a minimum value, replace (S3+S4)/2 with the signal S0 when [S3-S4] is a minimum value. A defect compensation signal generating circuit 15 activates the replacing circuit 16 when a signal by a defective picture element appears at the terminal 9d.
