PURPOSE:To put a displacement detector high in resolution into practical use by displaying a mean obtained by a mean arithmetic means on a digital display at every averaged period specified by a timing device. CONSTITUTION:A function button on an operational panel 33 is pressed to select an averaging display. A sampling period and an averaging period are set to 1msec and 1msecX10<2>=0.5sec, respectively, for instance. Then a sampling circuit 34C samples the counted value of a timepiece counting the pulse output of a reversible counter 32 at every msec during the sampling period, and stores it in a memory circuit 34A. On the other hand, a timing circuit 34B operates an averaging circuit 34D by 0.1sec during the averaging period, and said circuit 34D obtains the mean of 100 stored values. The obtained mean is displayed on a digital display 36. A light emitting diode 38 lights up at every averaging period of the circuit 34B. Accordingly the selected averaging period can be visible, and becomes a rough guide when an operator selects an optimum value in accordance with his work.
