PURPOSE:To perform the adjustment of gate timing at the time of the replacement of a lens only by the selective operation of a gate timing change-over switch, by providing a means for selectively outputting a gate signal of optimum timing corresponding to an acoustic lens to be used. CONSTITUTION:A timing control part 1A outputs a control signal (a) to a high frequency pulse generation part 2 and selects the gate signal (d) of optimum timing corresponding to each of a plurality of acoustic lenses 5 different in planning on the basis of the selective operation of a change-over switch 1B to output the same to the gate part 8A of a receiving part 8. A past signal (b) is outputted by a control signal (a) to be applied to a piezoelectric transducer 4 and converted to an ultrasonic wave. The ultrasonic wave allowed to irradiate the surface of a specimen 7 and reflected therefrom is condensed by a lens 5 and received by the transducer 4 to be converted to an electric signal (c) which is, in turn, guided to a receiving part 8 and controlled by the gate signal (d) in the gate part 8A and an unnecessary signal is removed.
