Tissue culture and production in permeable gels - comprises proliferating or preserving mammalian, e.g. hybridoma, cells by trapping in gelled alkali alginate droplets

Viable mammalian cells are proliferated by (1) suspending cells in alkali alginate (I) soln.; (2) forming the suspension into droplets; (3) gelling these droplets to form shape-retaining structures around the cells; (4) transferring these structures to a proliferation-promoting growth medium and (5) growing these cells within the structures. Alternatively the structures are transferred to a maintenance medium to preserve the cells.
