A metering device for adding a medium (agent) to the shower or bath water is connected to a conduit (6), through which the pressurised water flows in order to feed the medium to the water from a storage container (28). The object to be solved is that of automatically limiting the maximum amount to be added, while at the same time achieving a high degree of reliability. To achieve the object, a pressure-reducing valve (18) is arranged in the conduit (6), in front of and behind which valve there opens a first and a second branch conduit (20, 22), respectively. These branch conduits are connected to a first and second chamber (30 and 32, respectively) of a pumping device (24) having, in its interior, a flexible and/or displaceable separating wall for dividing it into the said chambers.
