The method and the device for applying a facing, preferably a veneer (2), to workpieces (5), such as panels or profiles of wood or a wooden material, work with a veneer sheet consisting of many veneers (2) connected with their abutting edges, which run transversely to the direction (B) of application, to form an endless sheet, this veneer sheet running off a veneer roll (4). Each veneer (2) of the endless veneer sheet has a length which corresponds to at least the length of the workpieces (5), and is preferably slightly longer than the workpiece length. The fed veneer sheet is scanned at its abutting edges (2a), and the workpieces (5), lined up in a horizontal plane in a continuous row, are transported in cycles so that, through this control, the front veneer edge (a) always coincides with the front workpiece edge (5a) when the veneer sheet is applied to the workpieces (5), and the veneer sheet and the workpiece row are connected in a continuous pass. <IMAGE>
