The variable projection arrangement serves to illuminate the operating area of a microscope, and facilitates both slit projection and variable illumination of the operating area to the extent that the arrangement consists of an achromatic lens (1) and an optical element (2) which is arranged between said achromatic lens and the image plane and is composed of two individually displaceable lenses (2a, 2b) with negative and with positive refractive power, the mutually facing surfaces (2a', 2b') of the two lenses being constructed such that the shape and action of a telescopic meniscus are obtained. <IMAGE>
