PURPOSE:To obtain the titled oligomer liquid capable of readily forming a thick silica film free from crack development on the surface of silicone or glass, by hydrolyzing condensation between methyl methoxysilane and water in the presence of a specific solvent. CONSTITUTION:The objective oligomer liquid can be obtained by hydrolyzing condensation between methyl methoxysilane and water using a catalyst in the presence of such a solvent as to be nonreactive with the methoxy group of said methyl methoxysilane (but including methanol and methanol ester). Said solvent is preferably of amide base (N,N-dimethylformamide or N,N- dimethylacetamide).
