To limit the penetration depth of a cutting punch of a punching tool into a die opening, at least one travel limit, designed as a buffer, is provided. Using this it is possible to set the penetration depth in such a way that the cutting punch penetrates into the die opening only as far as is required for cutting through a metal sheet. As a result, the punched blanks are virtually flat and it is thus possible to comply with even very narrow tolerances as regards the flatness of the blanks. <IMAGE>
