The invention relates to a process for separating off sulphur dioxide from boiler flue gases. In departure from the processes already known, in addition to the substance (4) to be burned and the oxygen-containing gas (5), pulverulent calcium oxide or carbonate or magnesium oxide or carbonate (6) is introduced into the boiler (1) in an excess in relation to the sulphur dioxide gas forming in the combustion chamber and water (9) is sprayed separately into the calcium oxide-containing or magnesium oxide-containing flue gases (8) thus obtained in a stage (2) separate from the combustion chamber. Alternatively, the pulverulent oxide (6') can be introduced directly into the flue gases coming from the boiler (1).
