PURPOSE:The title adduct that is obtained by adding lactic acid to a specific alkylene oxide adduct, thus being suitable for use as a base of surfactants for fiber and paper industry, because it has no smell with reduced change in quality with time and develops little turbidity when dissolved in water. CONSTITUTION:An alkylene oxide adduct to a polyhydric alcohol resulting from reaction of a polyhydric alcohol with an alkylene oxide in the presence of an alkaline or acidic catalyst is combined with lactic acid and/or a lactate salt, preferably sodium or potassium salt at a weight ratio of 100:(5-0.001), as it is, or in the form of an aqueous solution of 4-9pH. Then, they are stirred for about 30min to effect complete dissolution whereby the stabilized adduct is obtained. The polyhydric alcohol is, e.g., ethylene glycol, propylene glycol or polyethylene glycol. The resultant adduct is used in the fields concerning pulp metal, instruments, food, leather, detergent, cosmetics, synthetic resins coatings, etc.
