1427252 Catalytic structure S A E S GETTERS SpA 30 April 1973 [29 April 1972] 20502/73 Heading B1F [Also in Division F4] In a catalytic cartridge 10 for use in exothermic or endothermic chemical reactions and comprising a strip of material folded alternately in opposite directions to form a series of members joined together and located within a cylindrical housing or sleeve 18, each member comprises first and second segments 12 and 14 of involute form, an outer circumferential segment 13, and an inner circumferential segment 15. The strip may be of iron, aluminium or stainless steel, and the catalyst, e.g. silver, may be carried by the strip in any known manner for example the catalyst may be electrochemically plated onto the strip (see Fig. 11) or applied by plasma spraying or vacuum deposition. Alternatively the strip itself may be formed of catalytic material. The catalytic cartridge may be employed in a shell and tube heat exchanger 70 wherein a plurality of tubes 73, 73' containing catalytic cartridges extend between end housings 71 and 72 and a heat transfer medium entering the shell through inlet 74 and leaving through outlet 75 flows over the tubes. The chemical reactants may be gases which enter through inlet 76 and exit through outlet 77. Alternatively one of the reactants may be a liquid which flows either con- or counter-currently to the flow of gas and enters and leaves the exchanger by way of lines 78 and 80. At the centre of the cartridge is disposed either a plug 19, or a hollow tube (not shown) serving as a second heat exchange means. The reactants passing through the cartridge may comprise a mixture of ethylene and oxygen, some of the ethylene being converted to ethylene oxide. |
