The invention relates to an installation 33 for detecting the position of a motor vehicle transmission mechanism comprising a series of detection units 36a to 36d arranged at regular intervals facing the path of the end of a control member 34 for the mechanism, parallel to the direction of movement of this member. The problem to be solved consists in avoiding constructional modifications to the control member. The installation is characterised in that each detection unit 36a to 36d, 38, 39 provides an electrical voltage which is a function of the presence or absence of the control member 34.
