In order to obtain an arrangement which is on the one hand as compact and space-saving as possible and on the other as adaptable as possible in terms of its potential applications, a modular brake system construction is provided in such a way that a pressure-modulated, hydraulic high pressure brake booster, a first valve unit, connectable to the former's inlets and outlets for control (modulation) of its working pressure, a brake master cylinder and a second valve unit, connectable to its outlets, for either closing or opening brake lines led from the brake master cylinder to the wheel brake cylinders are each formed as structurally separate standard units which spatially and functionally can be directly coupled to and uncoupled from one another.
