A rotary cutter (15) and a co-operating rotary anvil (18) are provided co-axially with respective peripherally ribbed pinch rolls (16 and 19) which, like the rotary cutter, are heated to weld together in face-to-face relationship selvage strips formed by the cutting operation. This allows the welded selvage to have adequate mechanical strength for it to be used to advance the packages from which it was removed along a production line by the application of tension to the selvage. The rotary cutter (15) provides a very neat seal and the simultaneous removal of the selvage allows accurate registration of the selvage with the line of cut.
