Apparatus (24) for applying a force to an object comprises a frame (26) for attachment to the object to which the force is to be applied, first and second members (30,32) which are spaced apart and which are mounted for rotation, connecting means (40) connecting different relative parts of the first and the second members (30,32) together, and load-applying means (46,50,54,56) for causing the first and the second members (30,32) to rotate in opposite directions under an externally applied load, the apparatus (24) being such that rotation of the first and the second members (30,32) in opposite directions causes a shear force to be applied to the connecting means (40) to place the connecting means (40) in compression for reaction through the frame (26). <IMAGE> |
