747,278. Electric igniters for fuze cord. CANADIAN INDUSTRIES (1954), Ltd. Jan. 12, 1954 [Jan. 23, 1953], No. 823/54. Class 9(1) An electric igniter for igniting fuze cord comprises a drawn metal tube 1, which may be brass or aluminium, closed at one end by a split rubber plug 2 surrounding lead wires 3 which are spaced apart by a sulphur plug 4. A resistance wire 5 connecting the leads is surrounded by a loose ignition charge 6, preferably consisting of 70 per cent red lead and 30 per cent silicon. The bottom of the tube 1 is closed by a rubber plug 8 through which is threaded a length of igniter cord 7, the tube being crimped to the plugs 2, 8. Indents 11 in the tube act as a stop-for the plug 4. The igniter cord 7 may be threaded through the plug 8 in various ways. A single axial passage may house the cord, which is then knotted to prevent withdrawal. In Fig. 1 two diametrically opposed passages are provided in which the cord is held by crimping the tube 1. The ignition charge 6 may be red lead 70 per cent, silicon 19 per cent and silica 11 per cent, or red lead 99 per cent and boron 1 per cent, or red lead 96 per cent and titanium 4 per cent. Barium peroxide with magnesium may also be used with or without an inert diluent. Specifications 527,355 and 652,542 are referred to. |
