NEW MATERIAL:An optically active ether compound expressed by formula I (R is 2-12C n-alkyl; * is the optically active center; X is -COO-, -CH2CH2-, -CH2O- or -OCH2-; n is 1 or 2; Y and Z are independently single bond, 1,4- disubstituted phenylene or trans-1,4-disubstituted cyclohexylene; R' is 1-12C alkyl and alkoxy). EXAMPLE:The compound expressed by formula II. USE:One component in ferroelecric smectic liquid crystal compositions, having great spontaneous polarization, chemically stable, and used for ferroelectric smectic liquid crystal display elements or electrooptical elements, having improved reliability, and responsive at a high speed. PREPARATION:An optically active secondary alcohol expressed by formula III is reacted with p-toluenesulfonyl chloride expressed by formula IV in the presence of a basic compound, e.g. pyridine, to give a compound expressed by formula V, which is then etherified in the presence of a compound expressed by formula VI and a basic compound, e.g. K2CO3, to afford the compound expressed by formula I.
