PURPOSE:To determine an original even when a black level is detected at an end by providing a means which detects the density of the original, a means which stores the detected density, and a detecting means which detects the position of a change in the density information from white to black in a direction from the end of the original to the center. CONSTITUTION:The position of a character graphic form information area in the original is detected by a preliminary scan from data stored in a line RAM 50. The position of the original end is detected from the point where the level changes from white to black. A pointer is positioned at the tip (left end) of an image pickup element and when image pickup element information indicated by the pointer is the white level, the pointer is shifted in position until the information changes into the black level. Thus, when the change to the black level is detected, it is decided whether the position is smaller ten the position of an original end 1 obtained so far and when so, the pointer position is regarded as the current original end 1. The position of an original end 2 is also found similarly.
