PURPOSE:To eliminate the distortion of an image without reversing and braking a stepping motor during transmission and to reduce noises generated by the stepping motor by providing a storage detecting means for one of two memories and a transfer means which transfers a read image signal to memory or from this memory to the other memory. CONSTITUTION:A page memory 4 is stored with the read image signal and a buffer memory 5 is stored with an image signal to be encoded. This buffer memory 5 includes the buffer memory 5a and 5b, which are put in partial charge of encoding and transfer alternately to prevent a decrease in encoding speed. A DMA controller 7 performs the DMA transfer of the image signals. When an original is long, a system control part 1 detects the storage of the memory 4 to stop the stepping motor right before the memory 4 becomes full, and reads several lines successively to perform transfer from the memory 4 to the memory 5. Then, when the read advances to a point which is N lines before a readout stop line, original feeding and reading are restarted, and the stop and restart of the reading are repeated. Thus, image distortion is eliminated and motor noises are reduced during transmission.
