PURPOSE:To reduce a burden of attention on a moving operation of an operator by providing a means for generating a position mark signal, detecting a moving direction and a moving time based on said generation, and displaying a fact that the moving speed has exceeded a prescribed range. CONSTITUTION:A read part 1 is provided with an image sensor CCD 11, a binary circuit 12 and a clock driver 13, brings an original to a main scan and executes read of image information. The CCD 11 is started by a rise of a transfer gate pulse, executes a self-scan by a scan clock CL1 in a period in which the transfer gate pulse is 'high', and brings the original to a main scan. Accordingly, the CCD 11 executes repeatedly the self-scan in a prescribed period, irrespective of a moving speed in the sub-scanning direction of a hand scanner. A position mark detecting part 2 reads a position mark and outputs position mark signals F1, F2. A moving data detecting circuit 3 indexes a ROM table of a moving speed data by using a detected moving time value as an address, calculates a moving speed and displays it on a display part 6. When the moving time is too early or too late, read can be restarted by returning it in the reverse direction once again.
