In order to clean cooling tubes of a tubular heat exchanger (1) by including compressible cleaning bodies in the cooling water, the tubular heat exchanger (1) is connected to an inlet and an outlet tube (11 and 12 respectively), via a four-way cock (10), for alternately changing over the flow direction by means of its connecting tubes (2, 3). In order to trap the cleaning bodies, in each case one catchment device (4, 5) which is equipped with a catchment sieve (6, 7) and with a catchment chamber (8, 9) pointing towards the tubular heat exchanger (1) is arranged in the two connecting tubes (2, 3) so that a cleaning process is in each case initiated when the flow direction is reversed. For filling with new cleaning bodies, the one catchment device (4) is provided with a filling device (13), while a collecting device (18) is connected to the other catchment device (5) for removing cleaning bodies which have become unusable. <IMAGE>
