Thiazolidinedione derivatives represented by general formula (I), (wherein R<1> represents H or an optionally substituted hydrocarbon or heterocyclic residue, R<2> represents H or an alkyl optionally substituted by hydroxy, X represents O or S, Z represents hydroxylated methylene or carbonyl, m represents 0 or 1, n represents an integer of 1 to 3, L and M each represents H or, when taken together, one bond) and salts thereof are novel and are effective in reducing blood sugar level and blood lipid level of mammals, thus being useful as agents for treating diabetes and hyperlipemia.
