The invention relates to a method for an electronic telephone directory and notepad with a multi-line display and special operating keys. The object is to store speed dialling addresses in address memories and show them on the display when required not only in a known manner. It is also intended to be possible to store and read, i.e. locate, any other data simply and quickly. To achieve this, the display shows a number of search terms when the telephone station is in the idle condition, the data are allocated alphabetically to the search terms, each search term and thus the memory allocated to it can be activated through corresponding special key operation for storage or read-out and the data which are read out appear on the display. If the data are subscriber numbers, the connection is in each case set up following actuation of a line seizure key. For use in all telephone stations with multi-line display and corresponding storage units.
