AN ACCESSORY FOR A DOMESTIC KNITTING MACHINE

A yarn brake for a domestic knitting machine consists of a plurality of pairs of discs (22, 24) spaced apart along a straight rigid rod (20) of uniform non-circular section mounted in the path of the yarn (14) ahead of the needles so that yarn to be knitted passes between the discs of a pair. The discs (22, 24) are pierced centrally by holes of the same shape as the cross-section of the rod (20) so that they cannot rotate, but at least one of each pair can slide on the rod. A compression spring (32) bears on one disc (22) of a pair to bias it into contact with its fellow (24) and is housed in a spacing sleeve (36) freely mounted on the rod (20) between adjacent pairs of discs (23, 24). One or more pegs (28) on the mating surface of one disc (24) can freely enter a complementary socket (30) on the mating surface of the other disc (22) to act as retainers for the yarn (14) to guard against its displacement from between the discs. The rod (20) is carried in brackets (40) at each end which engage the needle bed or an adjacent fixture.
