PURPOSE:To perform automatic detection by amplifying the output of an AE (acoustic emission)sensor, rectifying and sampling a frequency component having high correlation with the abrasion of a tool at extremely small intervals of time, and deciding on the correlation between the mean value and maximum value of probability density relation among sampled data. CONSTITUTION:A cylindrical work 1 is held rotatably with a centering base 2 and a chuck 3, a cutting tool is fixed on a tool slide 4, and the AE sensor 7 is fixed on a shank 6. The output of the AE sensor 7 is amplified by a preamplifier 8 to a proper level. A band-pass filter 9 is provided at the output side of the preamplifier 8 to cut a noise component originating from mechanical oscillations, etc. The signal is rectified by a full-wave rectifying circuit 10 and then read in an A/D converter 11 and a microcomputer 12. The microcomputer 12 calculates the abrasion degree of the cutting tool, which is displayed digitally on an abrasion degree display device 13. |
