A connecting rod is proposed whose shank (3) has an essentially wave-shaped cross-section. The wave-shaped characteristic of the cross-section of the connecting rod shank can be produced both as a line interrupted at right angles as well as in a sinusoidal form. The proposed connecting rod is produced in a casting process and preferably consists of cast iron with spherical graphite or of malleable cast iron. The proposed shaping achieves a combination of advantages in terms of both strength and casting technology. On the one hand, the avoidance of material accumulation prevents the formation of cavities, and on the other hand the component strength levels are considerably increased by the wavy shape.
