To avoid losses in the case of a vane air pump, each of whose slots is aligned with an opposite slot, whose vanes have extensions or are linked to one another by linkages or the like, grooves are recessed into the oblique longitudinal slots and are provided with sealing bars, the preferably round sealing bars coming to bear as a result of centrifugal force and frictional movement and thus considerably improving the efficiency, and the sealing bars being disposed especially at the lowermost side of the longitudinal slots, so that the forces with which the vanes come to bear do not interfere functionally with the sealing bars. By virtue of the preferably triangular cross-section of the grooves, there results non-forced sealing, both when the vanes are being extended and when they are being retracted. The play between vane and slot in which the vane is sliding can thus be increased substantially without adversely affecting the output, and thus operational reliability can be increased.
